Native Hedging

Native Hedging

Hedgerows are a vital resource for our native fauna, especially when planted with species that wildlife love. These native hedging species provide food, shelter, and an abundance of beautiful flowers throughout the spring and summer.

Bareroot hedging | mid-November to March

Bareroot hedging is only available while the plants are dormant from mid-November to March. You can learn more about the differences between bareroot and potted plants and about planting a bareroot hedge in our advice section.

Potted hedging | all year round

Potted hedging is available all year, but the best selection, and the best time to plant, is in late spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October).

The large, mid-green leaves are broad, almost round, with a serrated edge, and turn yellow in autumn. The long, yellow male catkins appear in January and February; although the tiny, red-styled female flowers appear on the same tree, they must be pollinated by wind-blown pollen from another tree. From September, the hazel-nuts appear, sheathed in a frilly green husk; they are delicious, and highly nutritious – high in protein, mono-unsaturated fat, minerals and Vitamin E. Hawthorn, Whitethorn, or ‘Sceach gheal’ in Irish, it goes under many names and is one of our most important native hedgerow species. It makes a fantastic neat deciduous hedge as it clips well but can also be left to grow. Crataegus monogyna is easily recognisable in the month of May when its thorny branches are smothered in white flowers; the Autumn brings an abundance of its famous red haws which can be used to make jam or delicious Hawthorn jelly. A very important species that supports lots of wildlife. Hawthorn can often be found near holy wells and it is famous in Irish lore as the Fairy Tree - it is considered unlucky to cut an old one down. It will grow in most soils and will take wind and coastal exposure.

Site: Will tolerate inland and coastal exposure
Soil: Any reasonable soil other than very wet
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of Interest: Blossom in Spring, berries in Autumn
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: 13-26ft (4-8m) Spread: 13-26ft (4-8m)

["Bareroot","coastal hedging","Coastal trees","native","Native trees","thorny hedging
"option1":"Bareroot | 1-2ft","option2":"N/A","option3":"Certified Irish seed
Crataegus monogyna - It is such a potent plant that there is a saying that goes "if you stand still for too long, you'll have Willows growing out of your ears" in reference to it seeding itself everywhere. Along with Salix caprea it has been referred to as 'pussy willow' because of its furry catkins. Grey willow thrives on neglected, disturbed ground and, like most willows is very important to wildlife and soil regeneration in general. It’s a medium-sized shrub with a bushy habit and dull-green, lance-shaped leaves. In summer, pretty panicles of tiny white flowers appear at the tips of the branches; these are scented, although most people don’t care for it. These are followed by small, shiny, purplish-black berries in autumn. Wild privet is particularly good for wild-life, providing evergreen cover for nesting birds, good pollen and nectar for insects and berries for birds; it’s also the main food-plant of the privet hawk-moth. It’s good for hedging, as it clips very well, or it can be grown as part of an informal, wild-life-friendly hedge in wilder gardens. Be aware that it’s slightly toxic to pets and livestock, although they usually leave it well alone. Debated whether truly native or not.

Site: Tolerates exposure, including coastal exposure
Soil: Any well-drained soil; good on limestone soils
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of interest: Most of the year, summer and autumn in particular
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: 13’ (4m) Spread: 13’ (4m) if unclipped

["Bareroot","coastal hedging","Hedging","native","Native shrubs","wildlife hedging
"option1":"Bareroot | 2-3ft","option2":null,"option3":null
Ligustrum vulgare -
