Shrubs for Spring Interest

Spring is the peak season for flowering shrubs of many varieties—it is a joy to see their colourful flowers unfold after a long, cold winter. Rhododendrons and azaleas (on acid soil) will carry their clusters of beautiful flowers into early summer. Meanwhile flowering cherries will create a stunning show (at least until the first strong wind).

Learn more about what to plant and when to plant it in our advice section and find even more information in our resources.

Bareroot shrubs | mid-November to March

Bareroot shrubs are only available from mid-November to March. You can learn more about the differences between bareroot and potted plants in our advice section.

Potted shrubs | all year round

Potted shrubs are available all year, but the best selection, and the best time to plant, is in late spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October).

Oval, leathery, mid-green leaves appear in spring. The goblet-shaped flowers are unusual – a soft, creamy white with a distinctive rose-red ‘flame’ on each petal. The blooms appear in spring against the bare branches, or sometimes among the emerging leaves. Do not plant in a frost pocket, and mulch each spring, to protect the shallow roots from drying out. From March to May, russet buds open to pure white, lightly scented flowers, rather like those of a star magnolia, which are borne all along the stems, so you get masses of flowers. More flowers may appear, intermittently, until early autumn. The shrub starts producing flowers when still young. Magnolia Fairy White makes a beautiful specimen shrub, especially in smaller gardens, and can also be used as an informal hedge, as it tolerates clipping back.

Site: Sheltered – dislikes strong winds
Soil: Any moist but well-drained soil
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Season of interest: Spring in particular
Hardiness: Fully hardy
Height: 8’5” (2.55m) Spread: 8’ (2.4m)

Photos by M's Photo, cropped, and licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0.
"}

Ideal for growing in a pot in a sheltered patio, it can also be grown in a border.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Any moist but well drained soil
Position: Full sun
Season of interest: All year, especially spring and autumn
Hardiness: Fairly hardy
Height: 2’4”’ (70cm) Spread: 2’ (60cm)
"}
