Conifers

Conifers

From mighty redwoods to true dwarfs, conifers are generally hardy and low maintenance trees that give structure and winter interest to any garden.

Learn more about how to plant a tree in our advice section and find even more information in our resources.

Bareroot conifers | mid-November to March

Bareroot trees are only available from mid-November to March. You can learn more about the differences between bareroot and potted plants in our advice section.

Potted conifers | all year round

Potted trees are available all year, but the best selection, and the best time to plant, is in late spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October).

Cryptomeria japonica cristata grows into a mid sized conical tree. Its best attribute by far is its unusual looking fasicated cockscombs which lend a highly decorative appearance. These branches can be used for an extra attraction in floral bouquets, as they will keep their bright green colour long after being snipped off the tree. This tree is suitable for most gardens and can be pruned to keep the size down or left to grow into a full size tree. Its flat, linear yellow-green leaves are held on short deciduous shoots and take on bronze-yellow Autumnal colouring. The Swamp Cypress is tall growing and when grown near water produces unusual “knee-like” growths from the roots. Similar to the Redwoods, its bark is richly textured and has a red-brown colour. It is not a fast grower but will attain an eventual huge size and makes an ideal specimen tree, especially near water. Exceptional examples can be found in 'Swamp Cypress Avenue' in Fota wildlife park, Co.
