Perennials – Future Forests
Perennials

Perennials

Hardy herbaceous plants give years of colourful flowers and foliage from a single planting. Many of them die back in the winter, though some only flower in winter! Plan carefully and you can have interesting and ever-changing displays of beautiful perennial blooms throughout the whole year.

To learn more about choosing and growing perennials, check out some of our various articles in our advice section:

Availability and planting | All year

There are perennials for every season, though the largest variety is usually available in spring and summer when they are coming into (and in) bloom! Check back throughout the year to see our ever-changing varieties.

The leaves are deep green and very attractively divided, forming good ground cover from quite early in the year. They are good underplanted with ornamental alliums, which flower in early summer, because their developing leaves conceal the withering leaves of the alliums.  From mid-summer, beautiful, pure white flowers with golden stamens rise above the clump. Japanese anemones can spread rapidly in a border, and root deeply, so be sure to plant them in the right place. Cut back after flowering. From July to September, slightly cupped, single, soft pink flowers with a rose-pink reverse and golden stamens rise on wiry stems above the leaves; they are attractive to bees. This is a wonderfully easy perennial, needing no attention apart from cutting back in autumn, but be aware that it can run at the root, so choose your site carefully.
