Perennials

Perennials

Hardy herbaceous plants give years of colourful flowers and foliage from a single planting. Many of them die back in the winter, though some only flower in winter! Plan carefully and you can have interesting and ever-changing displays of beautiful perennial blooms throughout the whole year.

To learn more about choosing and growing perennials, check out some of our various articles in our advice section:

Availability and planting | All year

There are perennials for every season, though the largest variety is usually available in spring and summer when they are coming into (and in) bloom! Check back throughout the year to see our ever-changing varieties.

The glossy leaves are oval or spoon-shaped, and a deep purple-bronze colour, turning greener in winter or when grown in full shade. The Dragonfly cultivars are compact with large flowers, ideal for the smaller garden. Bergenia Angel Kiss (Dragonfly™ series) forms weed-suppressing clumps of deep green, oval leaves flushing deep wine-coloured in winter, wonderfully setting off the clusters of white, semi-double bell-shaped flowers. These appear in late spring, have reddish-pink calyxes and a pink throat, and gradually fade to pink. Once established, Bergenia Dragonfly Angel Kiss is very drought-resistant, ideal for free-draining soils or gravel plantings.

Site: Tolerates exposure
Soil: Any well-drained soil
Position: Full sun or partial shade
Hardiness: Very hardy
Height: 10” (25cm) Spread: 12” (35cm)

"option1":"Pot | 9cm","option2":null,"option3":null
["Pot | 9cm
"option1":"Pot | 2L","option2":null,"option3":null
["Pot | 2L
["//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Bergenia-Dragonfly-Angel-Kiss-01.jpg?v=1633347098","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Bergenia-Dragonfly-Angel-Kiss-02.jpg?v=1633347096","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Bergenia-Dragonfly-Angel-Kiss-03.jpg?v=1633347094","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Bergenia-Dragonfly-Angel-Kiss-04.jpg?v=1633347088
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Bergenia-Dragonfly-Angel-Kiss-01.jpg?v=1633347098
Type | Size
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Bergenia-Dragonfly-Angel-Kiss-01.jpg?v=1633347098
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Bergenia-Dragonfly-Angel-Kiss-01.jpg?v=1633347098
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Bergenia-Dragonfly-Angel-Kiss-02.jpg?v=1633347096
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Bergenia-Dragonfly-Angel-Kiss-02.jpg?v=1633347096
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Bergenia-Dragonfly-Angel-Kiss-03.jpg?v=1633347094
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Bergenia-Dragonfly-Angel-Kiss-03.jpg?v=1633347094
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Bergenia-Dragonfly-Angel-Kiss-04.jpg?v=1633347088
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Bergenia-Dragonfly-Angel-Kiss-04.jpg?v=1633347088

Bergenia Dragonfly Angel Kiss

Sometimes called elephant’s ears, bergenias are tough, reliable, evergreen perennials, invaluable in winter and spring. In good light, the slender leaves are olive-green flushed with deep orange-bronze and tipped with orange, turning orange-red in autumn. Insignificant, red-tinted, brown flower-spikes appear in July and August, lengthening as the seeds develop. In very mild areas, New Zealand sedge Prairie Fire is good inter-planted in drifts with hot-coloured perennials or in a gravel planting, but in colder parts it’s better in containers, which can be brought in for the winter.
