Ornamental trees

Ornamental trees

While no tree's only purpose in life is to be looked at, some are exceptionally showy to us as well as the birds and the bees. These trees are, what we would consider, ornamental because of their beautiful hues, showy berries, and various other aesthetics. They are sure to make a statement in any garden.

Bareroot ornamental trees | mid-November to March

Bareroot trees are only available from mid-November to March. You can learn more about the differences between bareroot and potted plants in our advice section.

Potted ornamental trees | all year round

Potted trees are available all year, but the best selection, and the best time to plant, is in late spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October).

Cercidiphyllum japonicum is one of our go-to trees, and we recommend it for gardens that are somewhat sheltered from coastal winds. The leaves of the Katsura appear pink in the spring, turning to bright green in summer before Autumn hues of yellow, orange and red. The Autumn foliage can smell of caramel just as the colour changes, hence the other common name 'Caramel tree'.

Site: Requires shelter from wind
Soil: Prefers well-drained, neutral to acidic soil
Position: Full sun, some shade
Season of Interest: Spring flowering, autumn colour
Hardiness: Hardy
Height: 20-25ft (6-7.5m) Spread: 10-15ft (3-4.5m)

["Bareroot","Garden trees","ornamental","ornamental trees
"option1":"Pot | 9cm","option2":"1-2ft","option3":"Young Tree
["Pot | 9cm","1-2ft","Young Tree
"option1":"Pot | 5L","option2":"2-3ft","option3":"Not provided
["Pot | 5L","2-3ft","Not provided
["//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Cercidiphyllum-japonicum-03.jpg?v=1633348795","//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Cercidiphyllum_Japonicum_FF.jpg?v=1569247701
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1402/5897/products/Cercidiphyllum-japonicum-03.jpg?v=1633348795
Type | Size","Height","Details

Katsura Tree

Deciduous tree with beautiful heart-shaped leaves and fantastic autumn colour. The growth habit is bushy and rounded. The flowers are fully double and a light, clear red, appearing in May. The deep green, glossy leaves are lobed like those of common whitethorn, appearing early and turning yellow and bronze in autumn as the crimson berries or haws appear. The tree has an attractive, upright habit and spreading, well-branched head, and the green leaves develop red tints in autumn. Masses of large, pink-tinged white flowers, 3cm across, in April and May are followed by heavy crops of yellow and red fruits like cherries, 2.5cm across, ripening to a deep glossy red by Christmas. The flowers are held in small clusters, gradually fading from pink to white, and at all stages beautiful against a clear blue winter sky. The toothed leaves emerge bronze, turning to green in summer and yellow and orange in autumn, colouring more reliably than the spring-flowering cherries. The winter-flowering cherry is a small, deciduous tree with an open, spreading habit, casting little shade, so it can be used in borders. The oval leaves emerge silver in spring, becoming a distinctive grey-green as the juvenile downiness wears away, and turning yellow to russet in autumn. Flat clusters of foamy, creamy-white flowers are borne in May, a good nectar source for pollinators. These are followed by orange-red berries, a food source for birds.
