Staphylea holocarpa Innocence

Chinese Bladdernut Innocence

Staphylea holocarpa 'Innocence', known as the Chinese Bladdernut, is an elegant deciduous large shrub or small tree with a graceful, multi-stemmed upright habit. In mid to late Spring, it produces a profuse display of hanging, four-inch clusters of lightly scented, bell-shaped flowers. These blossoms emerge from soft pink buds, opening to a delicate rosy-blush before maturing to a clean white just as the fresh foliage begins to unfurl. Following the flowers, the plant develops attractive, three-part green leaves that form a light, airy canopy. The blossoms then transform into the plant's most distinctive feature: inflated, papery seed capsules that look like small bladders. These unusual pods change from green to warm shades of pink and bronze by Autumn, hanging decoratively on the branches after the leaves drop and rattling gently in the breeze. This resilient species adapts reliably to Irish growing conditions. It is easy to care for, shows good resistance to honey fungus, and requires minimal pruning, making it an excellent choice for gardeners looking for something unusual yet low-maintenance.
