A pretty (and fashionable) cultivar of the rare native Irish great burnet, Sanguisorba officinalis Tanna is a compact, clump-forming, herbaceous perennial with blue-green leaves, divided into oblong leaflets. From July to September little bobble-like, deep maroon-red flowers rise above the mound of leaves on slender stems, making intense dots of colour against grasses and other perennials in a sunny border. A low-maintenance perennial, it seeds about, sometimes prolifically. Great Burnet Tanna holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
