Salix nakamurana var. yezoalpina

Yezo Dwarf Willow

From mountainous parts of the Japanese island of Hokkaido, Salix nakamurana var. yezoalpina is a ground-covering, deciduous, prostrate shrub with long, spreading stems which root as they go – they can be easily cut back if they exceed their allotted space. The deeply veined, ovate leaves emerge covered with silky white hairs, and mature to glossy green, turning yellow in autumn. The silky, yellowish catkins are held upright, and are borne in spring. The Yezo dwarf willow is a good ground-cover plant for a bank, as long as the soil is cool and moist.
