An old but superb, repeat-flowering rugosa rose, Rosa Roseraie de l'Hay is a medium-sized to large, vigorous, deciduous shrub rose with an upright, bushy habit, and very prickly stems. The fine, glossy, apple-green leaves are very deeply veined, like all rugosa roses, and turn yellow in autumn. From midsummer to autumn, long, deep wine-coloured buds open to masses of velvety, semi-double, informal, purplish-crimson flowers with a very strong, rich, rather spicy scent which carries on the air; flowering is continuous all through summer to early autumn. Makes a very good flowering hedge, and is a reliable, very healthy rose. Named after the rose garden of the same name near Paris, Rose Roseraie de l’Hay holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
