Chamaemelum nobile

Chamaemelum nobile - Roman Chamomile

A classic, aromatic perennial prized for its ability to create a fragrant, "living carpet" Chamaemelum nobile (Roman Chamomile) differs from the upright German Chamomile used in commercial tea production. The Roman variety is a low-growing, creeping evergreen which features soft, feathery foliage, releasing a delightful sweet-apple scent when walked upon or crushed, making it the traditional choice for chamomile lawns and fragrant paths. In summer, it is dotted with dainty, white daisy-like flowers with sunny yellow centers. It is perfect for softening the edges of stone steps, filling crevices in sun-drenched courtyards, or as a soothing groundcover in a sensory garden. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and maintains its lush green appearance throughout the year. It is possible to make tea with this variety, however it is much more bitter and 'medicinal' than the German Chamomile.
