Perhaps the finest Japanese flowering cherry of all, Prunus Tai Haku was lost in Japan, and only saved from extinction by the English flowering cherry enthusiast, ‘Cherry’ Ingram, who propagated it from a dying tree in Sussex and distributed it round the world. The Great White Cherry is a medium-sized tree, maturing to the classic broad, spreading crown, wider than its height – the perfect specimen for the larger garden. It is long-lived for a cherry, often reaching 100 years. Beautiful, pure white, single flowers 6cm across contrast wonderfully with the deep bronze-red of the emerging leaves; these are quite large, turn green in summer and acquire tints of yellow before leaf-fall. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
