Portugal Laurel - Angustifolia

Grown as a Hedge

Prunus lusitanica Angustifolia has smaller, darker leaves than Prunus lusitanica which makes it an even better choice for hedging and for topiary. It is also a bit bushier and has redder stems. It will thrive in any well-drained soil, even shallow chalky ones or heavy clay. It's very hardy and will grow in shade, but is not ideal for very exposed sites. Drought tolerant once established. Holds the RHS award for garden merit.
It also makes a lovely small evergreen tree, if left grow.
