Pachysandra terminalis

Japanese spurge

A superb choice for challenging areas, this evergreen sub-shrub is one of the most effective and elegant groundcovers for the shade. It forms a dense, uniform carpet of glossy, diamond-shaped leaves that are arranged in attractive whorls at the ends of the stems. This lush, dark green foliage remains vibrant throughout the year, even during the coldest months of Winter. In late Spring, the plant produces small, upright spikes of fragrant white flowers. While these blooms are subtle, they offer a delicate contrast against the deep green leaves. This plant is particularly valued for its ability to thrive in deep shade and its remarkable tolerance for dry soil conditions once established. It spreads steadily via underground runners, making it an ideal solution for underplanting large trees or filling in dark corners where grass and other perennials struggle to grow. Commonly known as Japanese Spurge, this plant is exceptionally low-maintenance and hardy. Its thick, leathery foliage is generally resistant to pests and diseases, and it creates such a solid mat that it naturally suppresses weed growth. It is a perfect structural plant for creating a clean, green backdrop in woodland gardens or shaded urban courtyards.
