A popular species of southern beech from Chile and Argentina, Nothofagus dombeyi is a tall, vigorous, very fast-growing, evergreen to semi-evergreen tree with a broadly columnar to conical habit. The grey-brown bark peels away, and the tree is shallow-rooted, so it must have a sheltered site. The small, toothed, long, ovate to lance-shaped leaves are shiny, deep green. This tree must have lime-free soil, and needs minimal pruning, in late winter or early spring. It’s very resistant to honey fungus, but can succumb to root rot..
