Magnolia obovata (syn. hypoleuca)

Japanese Big-Leaf Magnolia

A beautiful but very large magnolia, Magnolia obovata is a tall, vigorous, deciduous tree, with an upright, branching habit and rounded crown, suitable only for larger gardens or a woodland setting. The enormous, mid-green leaves, 20”/50cm long, are oblong to oval, and clustered at the tips of the branches. In May and June, the plant carries cup-shaped, creamy-white flowers with a pinkish tinge, crimson stamens, and a strong, delicious fragrance. The flowers are followed by cone-shaped crimson fruits. Japanese big-leaf magnolia needs minimal pruning; prune at midsummer only if necessary.
