A versatile shrub that is a member of the witch hazel family. Loropetalum chinense ‘Rose In Black’ is a compact, bushy evergreen shrub that brings a bit of drama and elegance to the garden all year round. Its foliage is a distinctive deep green with a rich purple tint, appearing almost black - a superb backdrop for the profusion of vivid flowers that follow.
From late winter to early spring, the plant bursts into colour with masses of deep pink, ribbon-like blooms that stand out strikingly against the dark leaves and attract bees and other pollinators. With its neat, rounded habit and exceptional foliage contrast, ‘Rose In Black’ makes a great choice for adding texture and depth to borders or containers.
Loropetalum does require shelter from cold winds and to ensure its hardiness in colder climates, especially during harsh winters, provide protection like a thick layer of mulch around the base and consider growing it in a pot so it can be moved into a protected area. It thrives in moist but well-drained soil and prefers a sunny or lightly shaded spot. Minimal pruning is required to maintain its shape - simply remove any straggly or damaged growth after flowering.
