Leucojum aestivum Gravetye Giant

Leucojum aestivum Gravetye Giant

Despite the name, Leucojum aestivum Gravetye Giant flowers in spring, from late March to May. It is a tall, fast-growing, deciduous, bulbous perennial with an upright habit. The green leaves are narrow and strap-shaped, disappearing in summer as the bulb goes dormant. From late March to May, the flowers emerge on sturdy stems like little white bells with green markings on the tips of the pointed petals. Plant in naturalistic groups; it is also a good companion to late-flowering tulips, emerging ferns and late yellow daffodils. Summer snowflake Gravetye Giant holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Grown by Irish master-gardener William Robinson in his garden at Gravetye (pronounced Grave-tie) Manor.
