Elaeagnus x ebbingei Compacta
An excellent variety for hedging, Elaeagnus x ebbingei Compacta is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub with a dense, bushy habit. Unlike Elaeagnus x ebbingei, this variety is well behaved and more compact shrub making it easier to maintain into a tidy hedge. It also has more prominent silvery leaves when they emerge, as if covered with stardust, which mature to glossy dark green. Small, very fragrant, bell-shaped, white flowers are borne in autumn; the flowers are good for pollinators. Oleaster Compacta is ideal for the smaller garden, especially coastal gardens, as it is very salt-tolerant, but keep it sheltered from cold, drying winds inland. Water until established; once established it is drought-tolerant. Can be grown in a container in soil-based compost.
