An old, refined and elegant, but reliable daffodil, Narcissus Thalia is a medium-sized, quite fast-growing, bulbous perennial with an upright habit, ideal for the smaller – or indeed any – garden. The leaves are narrow, almost grassy, and mid-green. Long-lasting, scented, multi-headed, flowers emerge from greenish-white buds, turning milk-white with slightly twisted, recurved petals and a delicate ‘trumpet’ in April and into May. As delicate as the flowers look, Daffodil Thalia is actually a toughie; it withstands wind, hail and rain, bulks up well, can be naturalised in grass, and the slender leaves die unobtrusively. Just be careful to plant them in a south-facing bed, as otherwise they will turn towards the sun, like all narcissus/daffodils. It makes a lovely, richly scented, cut flower (don’t mix narcissus with other flowers). Daffodil Thalia is best planted in big clumps or in drifts under deciduous trees, or goes very well with Tulip Spring Green in a zinc container.
