An ornamental hawthorn tree valued for its year-round interest and resilience. In late spring, clusters of scented, white blossom appear, attracting bees and other pollinators. These are followed in autumn by large, glossy, long-lasting orange-red berries that persist well into winter, providing colour as well as food for birds.
Crataegus ‘Splendens’ has glossy dark green leaves, broadly oval in shape (unlike the usual lobed leaves of the hawthorn). In autumn it takes on rich bronze and crimson tones, extending the season of interest. Compact and rounded in habit, ‘Splendens’ makes an excellent choice for smaller gardens, courtyards, or as a specimen tree, bringing beauty without demanding much maintenance. It is hardy, tolerant of pollution, and thrives in most soils, making it particularly well-suited to urban planting.
