Pampas grass, once a familiar sight in suburban front gardens, is undergoing something of a renaissance, with its handsome form and striking flowers used as a structural plant, particularly effective against evergreen foliage. This pink-flowered form, Cortaderia selloana Rosea, is a large, densely clump-forming evergreen, perennial grass with narrow, arching, sharply toothed, blue-green leaves. In late summer and early autumn, glistening pink, softly textured, feathery plumes rise to 6’6”/2m above the clump, contrasting beautifully with the leaf colour. The plumes remain on the plant through autumn and into early winter. Pampas grass Rosea is slightly smaller than the Argentine species, but is still a plant for the larger garden.
