Originally from the Eastern United States, Cornus florida f. rubra is a small, spreading, conical, deciduous tree. Mid-green, slightly twisted, leaves turn purple and red in autumn. The true flowers are small and yellowish-green and are surrounded by four showy white bracts flushed deep reddish-pink. These appear in early summer, and are followed in late summer by red berries, toxic to humans but loved by birds. The pink dogwood is a hardy, healthy tree, but flowers best in warm areas, and should be given a sheltered position in cold areas.
