Purple Hybrid Catalpa
A purple-leaved hybrid of the Indian bean tree and a related species, Catalpa x erubescens Purpurea is a medium-sized deciduous tree with a spreading habit. The big, heart-shaped leaves emerge very dark purple, turning dark green with a purple flush over the summer. Big, open panicles, 12”/30cm tall, of creamy-white foxglove-like flowers with purple and orange markings appear in late summer, and are followed by long, slender seed capsules which persist into winter. A good tree for pollinators. Purple hybrid catalpa holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
