An old variety of cider apple from Somerset, dating back to the late 19th century. Medium-sized, unevenly-shaped, greenish-brown apples with a crimson flush, giving a strong, bittersweet juice high in tannin and sugar, best blended with a sweeter variety. Apple Chisel Jersey is a vigorous, upright tree, and a spur-bearer. Very cold hardy and late flowering, it’s a good choice for colder areas. Susceptible to scab. Reliable cropper if its tendency to biennial bearing is countered by thinning the fruit. A poor pollinator, and incompatible with Dabinett, which flowers at the same time.
