Also known as Tunpetti, Acer pseudoplatanus Regal Petticoat is a large, fairly vigorous, deciduous tree with a spreading habit, an improvement on ‘Spaethii’, with bright red shoots and a tall, rounded habit and a high canopy. The 5-lobed foliage emerges burgundy, turning dark green with velvety purple undersides, and turns golden-yellow above and pinky-salmon underneath in autumn. Pendant panicles of scented, yellow flowers appear in spring, but do not set seed. The tree should not be allowed to dry out, as it’s sensitive to drought. It can tolerate salt and heavy urban pollution. It should be pruned in summer when the leaves are mature, as it will otherwise ‘bleed’. A good tree for coastal and urban planting.
