Acer palmatum Bloodgood

Product description

Japanese Maple Bloodgood

This Japanese maple has deeply cut lobed, dark red-purple leaves, turning bright red in autumn. Pendant clusters of tiny purple-red flowers are followed by red-winged seeds in late Summer. Acer palmatum Bloodgood is a reliable and popular variety. Requires a sheltered site.

Growing notes:
Acer palmatum and its cultivars are slow growing and do not really require pruning, but will tolerate it if necessary - remove damaged, diseased or crossing branches and lower branches can be taken off to shape the canopy over time. Pruning is best done during the dormant months.

Japanese Maples all require shelter from wind to avoid wind scorch. The very fine-leaved cultivars need extra protection from wind and the sun. Despite being hardy, the fresh growth can be vulnerable to frost in the Spring. They all tolerate growing in a large container, some for a very long time.

  • Cultivars with green or yellow foliage are best grown in dappled shade as full sun can scorch the leaves.
  • Cultivars with purple or red foliage require some sun to fully develop their dark colour.
  • Cultivars with variegated foliage require shade from the afternoon sun to prevent scorching.

    Site: Requires shelter
Soil: Prefers well-drained, neutral to acidic soil
    Position: Full sun, partial shade
Season of Interest: Attractive shape, red foliage in Summer, good Autumn colour
Hardiness: Fully hardy - fresh spring growth on young plants can suffer from frost damage
    Height: 15 ft (5m)  Spread: 15 ft (5m)

    Our current shipping times

    14-21 business days (average)

We have returned from our Christmas break and are now working through a large queue of emails and orders. We expect to be able to fulfill all current orders within the initial estimated time. You will receive an email with your tracking information as soon as your order has been shipped.

New orders should also ship within the above time and we hope to reduce this as we work through the backlog. Please only contact us about delivery times if your order has not arrived within the initial estimated time. Thank you for your understanding during our busiest time of year!

    Temporarily closed for in-person visits

Due to staff shortages we have chosen to close our nursery for in-person visits until further notice. You can still place orders through our website for delivery throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland and we will be offering collections from our parking lot.

For customers with immediate planting needs: you may contact us by phone or email to arrange a scheduled visit. Contact us at least two days in advance to arrange a visit.

For orders for collection: if we have contacted you to tell you that your order is ready for collection, you may collect between 10:00–16:00 (Monday to Saturday) or 12:00–16:00 (Sunday and bank holiday Mondays). Simply call us when you arrive in the main parking lot and we will bring your order out to you. If you need to collect your order outside of these times, give us a call and we will arrange a collection time and place for you.

    Plants delivered to your door

We ship to Ireland and Northern Ireland only. Packing and delivery for most orders will be €15 per order. However, larger plants and quantities will incur higher delivery charges (as much as €65 for pallet delivery). Delivery charges are calculated and added to your order at the checkout stage.

    Plants marked as 'collection/oversize delivery'

All plants that incur higher delivery charges are marked as 'Collection/oversize delivery'. To avoid higher delivery charges simply collect your order yourself from our nursery for free (use code collect at checkout) or select smaller variants while shopping on our store.

The best part about plants is that they grow! We find it far more exciting to order smaller plants, pay less for shipping (and help the planet at the same time), and then watch them grow big in their permanent home.

    Delivery

We are currently using An Post, DPD, and Prompto as our delivery providers. Once your order has shipped it may arrive the next day or it can take 2 or 3 days for the parcels to arrive (even longer during the holidays), we take special care to pack our plants in such a way that they will still arrive in perfect condition after several days in transit.
Delivery charges are calculated & added to your order at the checkout stage.

    Collection

Orders can be placed online to be collected at the nursery. Please use the discount code collect at the checkout to remove the cost of shipping. It currently takes approximately 2 days to process orders for collection. We will contact you when your order is ready and will be in touch with any issues with availability. Orders must be collected within 2 weeks of placing the order unless otherwise agreed.

    Potted plants

    9cm pots

A 9cm pot is about the size of a takeaway coffee mug, it is an ideal size for planting Herbs, Alpines & Heathers. We supply some young Trees, Conifers & Shrubs in 9cm pots for cost effective planting, they will just require a little extra care in the first year or two, mainly making sure they don’t get swamped by weeds.

    1.3L pots

A good size for Hedging as the plants are not too small but are still good value, we supply some unusual shrubs in this size too.

    2L pots

Some young ornamental trees and most common shrubs are available in this cost effective size.

    3L pots

A lot of our more unusual Shrubs and some trees are available in this size.

    4L, 5L and 7.5L pots

Many trees and more unusual Shrubs are available in these larger sizes, good for a more instant effect.

    10L Pots

This size is mainly for ornamental Trees.

    Bareroot plants

    1-2ft Bareroot

Plants will be easier to plant than larger plants but they will need to be kept totally clear of weeds for them to do well and they will take several years to offer much impact.

    2-3ft Bareroot

Plants are a good economical choice, they are nearly big enough to not get swamped by weeds.

    3-4ft Bareroot

This size is a good option for tree whips and Hedging as they will be well above any competition from weeds yet the roots won’t be too large for planting and they are not too tall to be knocked around by the elements too much.

    4-5ft Bareroot

This size is the best choice for hedging when an instant effect is desired or to get tree whips off to a head start, they will need a larger hole for planting and they will need to be checked that they are not getting loose in the ground from time to time after planting. This size is more likely to get battered by the weather, so in very exposed areas it may be best to plant in March after the worst of the winter has passed. This tree grade may require staking.

For more information about choosing bareroot or potted plants see our guide to bareroot vs. potted.
