Autumn Olive

A vigorous growing, deciduous shrub native to the Himalays, China and Japan. Elaeagnus umbellata has green to grey-green foliage with silvery undersides. Branches have sharp, woody, thorn-like spurs. Early Summer brings very fragrant, yellowish-white flowers and pale red, juicy fruits appear in Autumn. The fruit is edible and high in Vitiman C but must be fully ripe before it can be enjoyed raw, if even slightly under-ripe it will be quite astringent but the fruit can also be made into jams, preserves etc. The seeds are also edible but rather fibrous. Elaeagnus umbellata can also fix Nitrogen in the soil. Plant the Autumn Olive where the fragrance can be appreciated. Very coastal tolerant.
