Vitis coignetiae

Crimson Glory Vine

A large, handsome, deciduous climber with the most beautiful autumn colour, Vitis coignetiae is a very vigorous, tendril-climbing climber from Japan which will need substantial support. It can be grown informally through a sturdy tree, or along a long south- or west-facing wall. The heart-shaped, deeply-veined leaves, up to 1’/30cm long, with 3-5 shallow lobes, are deep green, thickly felted with tan beneath, and turn wonderful shades of scarlet, crimson, orange and purple through autumn. Insignificant, greenish flowers are borne in May and June, and are followed by small, blue-black, inedible ‘grapes’. Crimson glory vine holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
