Taxodium distichum - Swamp Cypress

Swamp Cypress

An unusual deciduous conifer tree and real beauty, Taxodium distichum grows well on wet soils. Its flat, linear yellow-green leaves are held on short deciduous shoots and take on bronze-yellow Autumnal colouring. The Swamp Cypress is tall growing and when grown near water produces unusual “knee-like” growths from the roots. Similar to the Redwoods, its bark is richly textured and has a red-brown colour. It is not a fast grower but will attain an eventual huge size and makes an ideal specimen tree, especially near water. Exceptional examples can be found in 'Swamp Cypress Avenue' in Fota wildlife park, Co. Cork.
