An excellent, dwarf cultivar of the stag’s horn sumach, grown mainly for its wonderful foliage, Rhus typhina Tiger Eyes is a small deciduous tree, with a spreading, suckering habit, although it’s said to be less invasive than the species. The narrow, ferny leaves, divided into finger-like leaflets, emerge chartreuse, quickly turning golden-yellow, then fiery shades of red and orange in autumn. In summer, the tree produces upright spikes of greenish-yellow flowers, followed, on female trees, by rich red berries. This little tree, broader than it’s tall, is best grown as a specimen in a lawn, so that any suckers can be mown off. Stag’s horn sumach Tiger Eyes holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
