Native to North America, Rhus glabra Laciniata is a large, spreading, suckering, deciduous shrub grown for its berries and brilliant autumn colour. The deep green leaves are 20”/50cm and deeply divided and fern-like; they turn fiery orange and red before leaf-fall. From mid- to late summer, the shrub carries white flowers in 8”/20cm conical panicles. These are followed by masses of red berries, which are very attractive to birds. Cut-leaved smooth sumach is an easy, low-maintenance plant, provided the suckers are mown off or removed.
