Quince Champion
Notable for coming into production quite young, Quince ‘Champion’ makes a charming, slow-growing small tree with an attractive, spreading habit. The season starts in late Spring with a display of pale blush-pink flowers nestled among downy green leaves, leading to heavy crops of large, golden pear-shaped fruit by mid-Autumn. These carry a powerful citrus aroma and have tenderer flesh than most other varieties, turning an appealing rosy-pink when gently stewed for pies, cheese, or jellies. Harvest the quinces while dry and strongly perfumed, taking care to beat the frost, and keep them boxed separately in a cool room so their pungent scent does not taint nearby fruit. In cooler or more exposed gardens, training it against a sunny, south-facing wall gives excellent shelter and helps the wood ripen thoroughly.
