One of the best purple-leaved cherries, Prunus ‘Royal Burgundy’ is a medium-sized, slightly spreading, deciduous tree, valued for its striking colour, lovely blossom and year-round interest. In habit and garden-worthiness it is like Prunus ‘Kanzan’, to which it’s closely related. Masses of large, double, rose-pink flowers open in spring among the emerging bronze foliage; this rapidly turns deep reddish-purple, contrasting beautifully with the flowers. The leaves turn brilliant red in autumn, and in winter the peeling, coppery bark prolongs the interest. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
