Prunus lusitanica - Portugal Laurel

Portugal Laurel

Grown as a Tree

A large evergreen shrub or small tree with dark green glossy foliage and reddish stems. If left to grow, Prunus lusitanica makes a very interesting evergreen tree with sprays of small, slightly fragrant, white flowers in spring followed by small red fruits turning to dark purple but it is most often planted as an excellent evergreen hedge.

Grown as a Hedge

Portugal Laurel is quite different looking to other laurels and has smaller leaves which makes it ideal for clipping and it can even be used for topiary. It is slower growing than common Laurel and suitable for keeping as low as 3 ft or as a tall hedge. Prunus lusitanica is very attractive and has a real touch of class about it.
It will thrive in any well-drained soil, even shallow chalky ones or heavy clay. It is very hardy & will grow in shade but is not suitable for very exposed sites. Drought tolerant once established.
