Populus tremula - Aspen

Quaking Aspen - (Crann creathach)

This is a beautiful tree with 'trembling' circular foliage, native to Ireland and much of Europe and Asia. It tends to grow in clonal colonies where it keeps 'suckering' rather than seeding, sometimes reaching many thousands of years old. When planted in a medium garden it is best to keep it well pollarded, for when even the slightest breeze is blowing, every leaf on the tree will shimmer with excitement giving a constant appearance of movement. Older trees may be covered with lichen and mosses. It has been a valuable forestry crop for a long time thanks to its quick regeneration cycles, and is used for matches, plywood, and paper. Also suitable for growing for firewood.
