A sport of the Crimean pine found in a park at Rochester, NY, Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana Pyramidalis is a tall, evergreen, coniferous tree with a narrow, pyramidal habit and a dense, narrow crown. The bark is blackish-grey and deeply fissured. The leaves are stiff, grey-green needles, up to 12cm long, borne in pairs. The small male flowers are yellow and scented, in clusters near the new growth; the inconspicuous female flowers are followed by single or paired cones up to 10cm x 4cm. Fastigiate black pine dislikes any shade and heavy soil, and is highly wind- and cold-resistant. Makes a good specimen tree for an exposed site.
