Pinus monophylla

Single-leaf Pinyon

Native to the interior mountains of the Western United States, Pinus monophylla, or the Single-leaf Pinyon, is a small to medium-sized, slow-growing evergreen tree with a dense, conical habit that becomes more irregular and rounded with age. Unique among pines for having needles borne singly rather than in pairs or clusters, its foliage is a striking waxy blue-green or glaucous grey, typically reaching 1-2” (3-5cm) in length. The tree produces small, yellowish male cones and squat, woody female cones which house the prized, edible pinyon nuts. With its rugged, charcoal-grey bark and ancient appearance, it serves as an exceptional, drought-tolerant specimen for rock gardens or xeric landscapes. It is remarkably tough, thriving in arid conditions where little else grows.
