Nothofagus dombeyi - Coigue Beech

Coigue Beech

A popular species of southern beech from Chile and Argentina, Nothofagus dombeyi is a tall, vigorous, very fast-growing, evergreen to semi-evergreen tree with a broadly columnar to conical habit. The grey-brown bark peels away, and the tree is shallow-rooted, so it must have a sheltered site. The small, toothed, long, ovate to lance-shaped leaves are shiny, deep green. This tree must have lime-free soil, and needs minimal pruning, in late winter or early spring. It’s very resistant to honey fungus, but can succumb to root rot.. Coigue holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit
