Muscari armeniacum

Armenian Grape Hyacinth

A richly-coloured, classic grape hyacinth, Muscari armeniacum bears conical spires of deep violet-blue, grape-like flowers with white tips in April and early May. The narrow, strap-like leaves are mid-green. A vigorous, hardy little bulb, it naturalises well, and looks lovely with cowslips or small yellow daffodils in short grass. It can also be planted in pots, in soil-based compost with plenty of grit. It can be invasive in borders, as it multiplies rapidly and self-sows. Armenian grape hyacinth holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, and is the bulb used for the famous ‘river of blue’ in the Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands.
