Monarda Gardenview Scarlet

Bergamot Gardenview Scarlet

With perhaps the most intensely red flowers of any garden bergamot, Monarda Gardenview Scarlet is a gorgeous plant for anyone with reliably moist, but not waterlogged, soil. It’s a vigorous, clump-forming, herbaceous perennial with an upright habit and elliptical, aromatic, mid-green leaves. From July to early September, the shaggy scarlet flowers appear in whorls up the stems, borne almost continually if the plant is dead-headed. Each flower has brilliant red, tubular, almost hooked petals surrounding a central boss and growing from pale green, pink-tipped bracts which turn bronze when the petals fall. The flowers are very attractive to bees, butterflies and moths. Bergamot Gardenview Scarlet is partially resistant to mildew, that curse of monardas. Lovely in a prairie planting. Leave the dead stems on the plant for winter structure, and mulch well in spring. Bergamot Gardenview Scarlet holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
