Molinia caerulea Variegata

Variegated Purple Moor Grass

A variegated cultivar of the native purple moor grass, and one of the very best, Molinia caerulea subsp. caerulea Variegata is a clump-forming, deciduous, perennial grass with a compact, upright, rather soft habit. The upright, arching leaves are deep green with striking cream-striped variegation, turning a rich, pale buff in autumn. From late July to September and into October, narrow, airy, purple-brown flower spikelets appear above the clump of leaves on slender stems 60cm tall. Cut back in late winter before new growth appears. Variegated purple moor grass is lovely grown with low perennials like achilleas, asters and persicaria, bringing a splash of light to the border, or reflected in a garden pool.
