A Danish-bred cultivar of one of the Japanese crabapples, Malus toringo Scarlett is a moderately vigorous, small, deciduous tree with an attractive, oval-headed, upright habit, making an excellent ornamental specimen tree for year-round interest in the smaller garden. The leaves emerge copper-purple, turning bronzy-green and remaining so throughout the summer before taking on yellow, red and orange tints in late autumn and falling only very late in the year. Masses of long-lasting, dusky-pink blossom sit well with the emerging leaves. The fruits are small, deep purple, and persist late into winter, eventually providing food for birds. Self-fertile. Good disease-resistance. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
