Apple Alkmene

Apple Alkmene

Also known as Early Windsor, dessert apple Malus domestica Alkmene was bred in Germany in the 1920s. The fruit is medium-sized, with yellowish-green skin heavily flushed with red. The creamy-white flesh is very firm and juicy, with a rich, aromatic, tart flavour, reminiscent of a Cox (one of its parents), but sharper and noticeably juicier. A fairly small tree with a bushy habit, it’s a good cropper, and a spur-bearer. It’s also a very attractive tree, with scented, pale pink flowers fading to white, and good autumn colour. Not for areas prone to late frosts, as it flowers quite early. Apple Alkmene holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
