Purple loosestrife

A beautiful native wildflower that brings vertical interest to damp areas, Lythrum salicaria, commonly known as Purple Loosestrife, is a robust perennial beloved for its long-lasting Summer colour. From June to September, its tall, slender, square-sided stems are densely packed with eye-catching spikes of vivid purplish-pink or magenta flowers. The narrow, willow-like green leaves provide an elegant, upright framework that stays neat and structurally sound throughout the growing season. This plant is an absolute powerhouse for wildlife gardens and a vital nectar source for bees, butterflies, and hoverflies. Naturally adapted to marshy areas, riverbanks, and lake margins, it is exceptionally tough and thrives in soils where other plants fail due to waterlogging. It brings an architectural, meadow-style charm to the garden and pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses or softer, moisture-loving perennials.
