An unusual, evergreen and compact shrub Loropetalum chinense ‘Black Pearl’ is admired for its rich, dark foliage and vibrant pink flowers that bring striking contrast and long-lasting colour to the garden. The leaves emerge deep burgundy and mature to a lustrous purple-black, providing a dramatic backdrop throughout the year.
From late winter into spring, clusters of vivid magenta-pink, ribbon-like blooms appear in abundance, creating a dazzling display against the dark foliage and attracts bees and other pollinators.
Loropetalum does require shelter from cold winds and to ensure its hardiness in colder climates, especially during harsh winters, provide protection like a thick layer of mulch around the base and consider growing it in a pot so it can be moved into a protected area. It thrives in moist but well-drained soil and prefers a sunny or lightly shaded spot. Minimal pruning is required to maintain its shape - simply remove any straggly or damaged growth after flowering.
