Hydrangea macrophylla Glowing Embers

Mophead Hydrangea Glowing Embers

A very compact, mophead hydrangea, Hydrangea macrophylla Glowing Embers is a fast-growing, deciduous multi-stemmed shrub with a rounded, bushy habit. The broadly ovate foliage is glossy green, turning deep red in autumn (hence the name). Pretty, mophead flowers open from midsummer, bright pink (alkaline soil) or blue (acid soil). There is often a second flush of flowers in the autumn. It can be grown in soil-based compost in a medium-sized container, and looks wonderful in matching pots arranged along the house or in a courtyard. Prune to a pair of fat buds in early March; the dead-heads will protect the buds from frost. Every three years remove a few of the oldest stems, then feed and mulch. Keep well watered. Makes good dried flowers.
