Huodendron biaristatum

Grown for its polished evergreen foliage and sweet Summer scent, Huodendron biaristatum is a rare, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree noted for its upright, architectural habit and year-round presence. Native to the mountain forests of southwestern China and Vietnam, it features slender, lance-shaped leaves that emerge bright green in Spring before maturing into a deep, glossy dark green. From mid-to-late Summer, terminal clusters of delightfully fragrant, ivory-white, bell-shaped blossoms appear across the canopy to draw in late-season pollinators. It performs exceptionally well when sited in a sheltered woodland border, sunny courtyard microclimate, or any position offering rich, moisture-retentive, acid-to-neutral soil. A naturally low-maintenance specimen for plant collectors, it requires very little routine pruning—simply trim away any frost-damaged or crossing branches in early spring as new growth begins.

Soil: Fertile, moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil rich in organic matter. Dislikes heavy, waterlogged ground or chalky alkaline conditions.
