Also called Ribbowood, this New Zealand native, Hoheria glabrata is a deciduous, medium-sized tree or large shrub with attractive bark. One of the earliest Hoheria's to flower. In July masses of pure white, fragrant, five-petalled flowers look great against the new foliage. It’s reasonably hardy, and thrives in warmer gardens, but is not for the coldest sites; protect the roots with a mulch in winter. Ribbonwood is trouble-free, and can be grown as an informal evergreen screen in larger gardens. Will grow in a coastal site if protected from the worst of the wind.
