Filipendula vulgaris

Dropwort

A versatile and elegant native perennial, a close relative of meadowsweet, this plant is an excellent choice for adding a frothy, delicate texture to the margins of a pond. When grown in aquatic compost, it acts as a hardy marginal plant that bridges the gap between the water's edge and the surrounding garden. It produces stunning mounds of fern-like, dark green foliage that remain attractive from Spring through to the end of the year. In early Summer, airy plumes of creamy-white flowers rise on slender stems, providing a light and graceful display that lasts until late Summer. Because it is highly adaptable, it is perfect for bog gardens or the shallowest shelves of a pond where the soil remains consistently wet. It is a fantastic nectar source for pollinators and is a tough, reliable performer that handles exposed and breezy Irish garden sites with ease.
