Fig Sultane

An autumn-ripening fig from the south of France, Fig Sultane is nevertheless suited to Irish conditions because the figlets form late enough to escape frosts. In the warmest parts of the country, it can be be fan-trained against a south- or south-west-facing wall; the roots will need to be confined to a planting pit or root restriction bag to restrict growth and encourage fruiting. It may be better grown in a large pot in soil-based compost in a cool greenhouse or polytunnel. The fruit of Fig Sultane is medium-sized to large and deep purplish black; the flesh is very sweet and succulent, strawberry-pink when fully ripe, and of very high quality and fruity flavour; allow to ripen on the tree. It is ready to pick when soft, bending at the neck and slightly shrivelled. Heavy cropper.
